Train station totem

I, creature of habit
here again

a tree
stands across the rail
still leafy
darkening green
heavy in physalis gold
autumn berries
delight
gorging blackbirds

morning
everyone subdued
miles to go
interrupted sleep

big city commute
at the platform
collective
unspoken sigh

that’s ok
work of our hands
its our lot,
our choice, but…
sleep was so cosy
takes a while
waking up

you, my platform companion
steady
each day
each season
quiet

quiet friend
being the need
of a morning
filtering thoughts

icy sunrises
glimpsed
thr’ February boughs

occasional jay
dancing thr’ lime leaves
of summer sun

squirrels
always fast
but never in a hurry
pop in and out
trampoline
stepping stone
on a nutty quest

Spring buds
announce
end
end of the long dark
evocation
earth’s new equinox

pigeons
always the pigeons
comical
irrepressible
stupid
yet smart somehow
in animal
instinctive ways
and who am I
to judge
coo coo

big city commute
standing at the platform
collective
unspoken sigh

but tree
quiet companion
guardian of seasons
witnesser of trains
digester of light
reminder
reminder
life is nigh
this coming day
and beauty
it is
to be found
